NAPPI PBS Model Trainer Programme (Level 1)

NAPPI uk has been providing health and social care organisations with the NAPPI Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Model for 30 years. In this time, NAPPI uk has successfully trained thousands of individuals to become trainers. NAPPI Onsite trainers are comprehensively supported by bespoke online systems that collate training materials, process and certificate training following robust IQA processes.

100% of all NAPPI courses are audited before certificates are released. Production of workbooks and issue of certificates is fully inclusive. Having your own onsite trainer has many benefits and can be a cost-effective solution for most organisations, large and small!

There are different lengths of trainer programmes (depending on identified needs) with all courses containing the NAPPI PBS Model that has been awarded Silver by the Skills for Care Peer Review process.

Level 1 trainer programme

This five-day course contains primary prevention strategies, such as the Amber Section that identifies reasons why an individual becomes distressed. Care Team Response considers how the wider team reflects upon the organisation and individual working practices to ensure quality of service delivery. The Green Section increases understanding of the positive impact of quality verses the negative impact of absence of quality.

Secondary prevention strategies include the Red Behaviour Scale, a tool to assess the level of behaviour of concern. It provides a translation of the communication of presenting behaviour to enable selection of appropriate responses from a range of options.

The course includes non-restrictive tertiary physical strategies i.e. Blocking skill, Grab release and Guiding skill. We use the term self-protection, because we do not want employees to ‘breakaway’ from an individual who may have grabbed out of fear; as a means of non-verbal communication; or because they don’t want to be left. It depends on the reason why an employee has been grabbed, so we teach recognition before action – there may be no need for a physical skill to be used. However, we recognise there are times when employees need a robust skill to keep themselves safe, but it should not frighten, traumatise, or cause pain to a vulnerable individual.

NAPPI teaches physical skills using the framework of the 5 SMART Principles an approach that enables staff to utilise physical skills in different ways. There is no need to teach numerous blocking skills, when one skill can be utilised so that staff have more time to practise each physical skills, making it easier to recall if required.

NAPPI training is about making people change the way they THINK. However, it is Co-production that changes the way people FEEL. This is why all onsite NAPPI trainers see the NAPPI Co-Production training team on Initial training, and recertification courses. We encourage, support and even nag our onsite trainers to develop their own Co-trainers from the Experts-by-Experience within their own organisations and have training to support this.

We are confident that the majority of organisations that embed Level 1 (Foundation) training, including Co-Production, will not need to train their employees in additional physical skills. However, we recognise that at times, even the best services will need additional training and that is why we provide optional Level 1 (Advanced) skills, including Bite Avoidance and Release; Hair-Pull Avoidance and Release and Front-Choke Escape. A few organisations will identify the need for Physical Restraint or Clinical Holding skills. See Level 2, Level 3, and Safety Pod trainer programmes.

Requirements for being a NAPPI Trainer

The Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards require trainers (who deliver restrictive skills) to meet the Trainer Specification.

NAPPI uk, considers the RRN Trainer Specification to be best practice, even when a service does not come under the RRN Training Standards. For example, not requiring restrictive physical skill training, or not inspected by CQC. Trainers must (for RRN) and should (for non-RRN) meet the following: Person Specification for On-site NAPPI Trainer.

Selection of Potential Trainers

When selecting individuals to send on this course the organisation should consider if the individual has both relevant work-based experience and good attitude to the principles of promoting good practice in the interests of the customers they serve. It is an advantage, not a requirement, to have previous presentation skills. The course teaches delivery and presentation skills so the main consideration should be whether the individual has a positive attitude and credibility within the staff team.

Restraint training requires a certain level of physical fitness in the trainer. It is important that the trainer understands what is required prior to attending this course.
