Restraint Trainer Programmes (Level 2 & Level 3)

Restrictive physical skills are those actions that restrict an individual’s movement in order to take control of a situation identified as potentially dangerous.

Each NAPPI training course starts with the NAPPI PBS Model (Level 1). We strongly promote that if these skills are embedded into working practice, there is less likelihood of a need to progress onto need restraint skills. However, when needed skills must be both non-abusive and effective.

Level 2 Standing Restraints.

Level 3 Seated and Supine Restraints.

Safety Pods increasingly used to reduce the use of floor restraints. NAPPI teaches a range of skills specifically developed for use with Safety Pods.

Risk Assessments

All physical skills have robust risk assessments made available within the Organisation and Trainer Accounts. NAPPI risk assessment documents were developed by an Independent Biomechanical Expert using assessment tools such as REBA (method to evaluate ergonomic risks); Borg (perceived level of difficulty) and Benner (stages of competence) with scores available.

Restraint Reduction Network Training Standards

These apply to organisations that are inspected by CQC and/or receive NHS funding and may need to use restrictive practices, including Clinical Holding. NAPPI was one of the first providers to be certificated by BILD ACT (Association of Certified Training) as complying with the RRN Training Standards, Also, to support clients as ‘Affiliated Service Providers’ under our umbrella, so that they can deliver RRN certificated training within their own organisations.

Outlines

All RRN compliant courses are delivered to outlines that meet identified needs, created through rigorous review of Training Needs Analysis (TNAs) and Individual Risk Assessments (IRAs). NAPPI produces a Recommendation Report, including a course outline based on the data provided, such as diagnoses and topography of presenting behaviour. Whilst all courses are developed to meet and individual Service User’s need, her are some examples of compliant outlines.

Requirements for being a NAPPI Trainer

The Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards require trainers (who deliver restrictive skills) to meet the Trainer Specification.

NAPPI uk, considers the RRN Trainer Specification to be best practice, even when a service does not come under the RRN Training Standards. For example, not requiring restrictive physical skill training, or not inspected by CQC. Trainers must (for RRN) and should (for non-RRN) meet the following: Person Specification for On-site NAPPI Trainer.

Selection of Potential Trainers

When selecting individuals to send on this course the organisation should consider if the individual has both relevant work-based experience and good attitude to the principles of promoting good practice in the interests of the customers they serve. It is an advantage, not a requirement, to have previous presentation skills. The course teaches delivery and presentation skills so the main consideration should be whether the individual has a positive attitude and credibility within the staff team.

Restraint training requires a certain level of physical fitness in the trainer. It is important that the trainer understands what is required prior to attending this course.
