Expert-By-Experience
Trainer Development
Co-Production is an equal partnership between service users (Experts-By-Experience) and service providers. It is a values-driven approach that involves working together in planning and shared decision-making.
We place great trust in our Co-Production training team, who represented the company by presenting to the BILD Association of Certificated Training (ACT) when we became one of the first companies to achieve certification under the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards. NAPPI employee Tony Hart was recognised as the first Expert-By-Experience to present to the BILD ACT panel as part of the NAPPI re-certification.
“This was an excellent presentation and in fact NAPPI could be considered as an exemplar of the process and principles of Co-Production”.
(BILD ACT, October 2019)
It is widely recognised as best practice to include Experts-By-Experience in the delivery of training; however, they are rarely adequately prepared for this role. As a company dedicated to trainer development, we take responsibility for promoting the growth of Experts-By-Experience, both internally and externally.
Each NAPPI trainer recertification programme includes guidance on how to mentor Co-Trainers within an organisation. Our approach goes beyond simple involvement – it encourages growth, continuous development, and meaningful employment for Experts-By-Experience, whose voices must be heard. Expert-By-Experience input is monitored through our submissions process, where we assess levels of involvement in the preparation and delivery of workshops.
NAPPI UK offers two Co-Trainer development courses, modelled on the journey of Experts-By-Experience since 2012:
- Level 1: Preparing the venue
- Level 2: Preparing for training
The Lead Trainer (as a mentor) is provided with guidance on how to gather appropriate evidence to meet the assessment criteria. This evidence is uploaded to the NAPPI Distance Learning portal and scrutinised by the Quality Assurance team before certification is issued.
We recognise that each Co-Trainer has different skills and support needs. Using our tried and tested Developing a Training Partnership model, we assist in creating Individual Learning Plans for each Co-Trainer. Course outlines are designed to support inclusion across different ability levels, enabling increased involvement from Co-Trainers as their competence and confidence grow
