Understanding Restrictive Practice & Reducing Restrictive Practice

A focused 90-minute stand-alone session from NAPPI, designed to help teams build awareness, reflect on practice, and support more person-centered – least restrictive approaches.

About the session

These two modules are usually delivered as part of NAPPI programmes and are now available as a dedicated standalone session. This enables organisations to access focused learning on restrictive practice without committing to a full programme.

The session explores what restrictive practice is, how it can arise intentionally, unintentionally (or spontaneously), and how teams can actively promote freedom, accountability, and improved quality of life.

What the session includes:

  • Understanding Restrictive Practice
  • Reducing Restrictive Practice
  • Practical discussion and reflection
  • Certificate for each participant

What participants will gain:

  • Clear understanding of restrictive practice and how it differs from restrictive intervention
  • Awareness of different types of restrictive practice in everyday support
  • Insight into how restrictive practices develop through routines, culture, or crisis response
  • Strategies to promote least restrictive, person-centered approaches
  • Increased confidence to recognise and reduce restrictive practices
  • Focus on improving quality of life and promoting choice and independence

Who would benefit:

  • Support workers
